FREE ONLINE INCOME TAX FILING FOR TAXPAYERS
BOISE,
IDAHO — Jan. 31, 2005 —Qualifying taxpayers can find software companies that
provide free online filing for both their federal and state income tax returns through
the Idaho State Tax Commission’s Web site. To get a list of providers as well as their
eligibility requirements, go to tax.idaho.gov and click on the "Free income tax
filing" link on the home page.
The state of Idaho has partnered with the IRS and tax software companies to provide
this free service to taxpayers. About 60 percent of filers qualify to file for free. Those
who don't qualify for free filing can use the site to find providers who offer electronic
filing for a fee.
Electronic filing programs increase the accuracy of returns and reduce tax return
preparation time. Electronic filers receive a confirmation receipt and a printable
copy of their return for record-keeping. They also get faster refunds.
Taxpayers who file their income taxes online must file their state and federal
returns at the same time. Those who Telefile their federal tax return will not
be able to electronically file their state return. Instead, they will need to
file a paper return.
Last year, 45 percent of Idaho taxpayers filed their individual income tax
returns electronically
